Jörg Stolz

Jörg Stolz studied general sociology, the sociology of religion, economics, and philosophy in Zürich (CH) and Bielefeld (D). He received his M.A. in 1994 and completed his doctorate in 1999 at the University of Zürich. He also pursued post-diploma studies in statistics at ETH Zürich from 1995 to 1997. His postdoctoral training included research stays in Paris (F) and Mannheim (D), as well as a four-month methods program at ICPSR in Ann Arbor (USA). Since October 2002, he has been a full professor of the sociology of religion at the University of Lausanne (CH).

Jörg Stolz combines a strong interest in sociological theory with both quantitative and qualitative empirical research. Theoretically, he aims to develop a general theory of social games and a theory of religious–secular competition. Empirically, his work covers religious beliefs, explanations of secularization and re-sacralization, comparisons of local religious groups, Islamophobia, and secular and atheist worldviews.
